GLENROTHES

SPEYSIDE

Sweet, and often a complex experience with spice, fruit and perfume.

The first spirit flowed through the stills of Glenrothes on the day the Tay Rail Bridge collapsed, on 28th December 1879. Glenrothes of Speyside (rather than the Fife town of the same name) produces a delicious after-dinner malt that is a key filling in famous blends such as Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse.

It has long held the status of being a 'Top Dressing' malt, a nomiker given to those malts which are the most highly prized by blenders for quality. The water is taken from the Ardcanny and Lady's Well springs near the distillery.

They only use Scottish barley, malted in Saldin boxes at Tamdhu, and the official bottlings are from casks matured at the distillery. The official bottlings are bottled by the wine merchants, Berry Bros. & Rudd who offer them as vintages, which is not surprising given their status as respected wine merchants. Their distinctive dumpy bottles are massively popular and have been highly praised.

The casks they select, carefully chosen from 2% of the distilleries annual output, are mostly matured in sherry casks with 25% being fresh, and a few bourbon casks occasionally used to provide balance and extra depth. Independent bottlings of Glenrothes are also frequently found, with some impressive examples to be enjoyed. All in all, Glenrothes is a fantastic whisky to give as a gift to any lover of fine malt - disappointment is an extremely unlikely outcome!
